Centennial Earns Accreditation with Commendation from Commission on Cancer

Jan. 20, 2010 – The Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at Centennial has been granted three-year accreditation with commendation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

The accreditation program sets quality-of-care standards for cancer programs and reviews the programs to ensure they conform to those standards. Accreditation is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. To maintain accreditation, facilities must undergo an on-site review every three years.

The Cancer Center received the Commission on Cancer’s highest possible rating, making it eligible for the commission’s Outstanding Achievement Award, to be announced later this year.

“We are proud to be recognized by the Commission on Cancer as offering the very best in cancer care,” said David Spigel, M.D., chair of medical oncology. “This important recognition is a testament to the quality of our comprehensive, multidisciplinary care and our team of exceptional physicians, nurses and staff.”

Accredited cancer programs must ensure patients have access to:
• Comprehensive care, including a range of state-of-the-art services and equipment
• A multi-specialty, team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
• Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
• Access to cancer-related information, education and support
• A cancer registry that collects data on type and stage of cancers and treatment results, and offers lifelong patient follow-up
• Ongoing monitoring and improvement of care
• Quality care close to home
